Nine top tips to help your move overseas go smoothly

July 10th, 2009 by wavecrest

If you are planning on emigrating from the UK, here are nine top tips to help ensure your move goes smoothly -

Summer is the peak moving season coinciding with the start of the school holidays. If you can be flexible, please do not wait until the Summer to move. The first and last weeks in a month and Fridays are also extra busy times for all movers.

If a full door to door packing service is required, please leave plenty of time to arrange for an agent to survey your household and prepare an estimate.

Remember to check your house carefully before the agent arrives from attic to garage and garden shed to determine what items will need to be moved and which will be left behind.

If you plan to pack items yourself, start collecting suitable packing materials and containers well before the moving date.

Have all packing completed in good time for the moving day to avoid any delays.

Carefully dispose of all flammable or other hazardous items such as cleaning materials (e.g. bleach), aerosols, fireworks, matches, paint etc. Drain petrol from lawnmowers, outboard motors etc.

Remember to disconnect and drain washing machines and defrost fridges and freezers.

Unplug all electrical items such as televisions, computers etc 24 hours in advance of a move so that they will be at room temperature on moving day.

Make an inventory of all items that you are shipping and remember to number the packages. This will be required for Customs purposes both in the UK and at the country of destination. It will also make it easier for you to find things when you move into your new home.

Wavecrest Ltd provides removal services by air and sea to international destinations as well as by road transport to Ireland, mainland Europe and Scandinavia.

We do not currently offer domestic removal services within the UK.
